Full description

Selfheal has purple/violet flowers on a spike and was thought to have some medicinal value, hence its name.

Although it is said to favour damp soil, it is also frequently found on well drained chalky soils and crops up in many a lawn.

It can feature in most grasslands provided it is grazed or cut regularly.  Selfheal will rapidly colonise any gaps in a grass sward and it is an important nectar source.  Hoverflies, bees & butterflies love it.  It is also a food plant for the larvae of the moth Coleophora albitarsella.
